People in the Middle Ages had, of course, no idea of this peculiar time frame, and historiographers did not resort to this term for chronological purposes until the seventeenth century when Christoph Cellarius—one of the first to employ such categories—published his three books on universal history, Historia antiqua (1685), Historia medii aevi (1688), and Historia nova (1696).
